I think innocence is at least diminished if not lost when someone experiences a huge disappointment in life. Like when a child first learns something like that their dad doesn't love their mom, or sees domestic violence in the home. Or if they actually lose a parent. If they are not nurtured and become cynical or hardened, isn't that losing a sense of your innocence? Just a thought.

Through the deceit of a mentor or leader. For instance America lost it's innocence through the Watergate Scandal. People generally trusted the government before that.

Go for a trust issue. For instance, a child learning that their parents lied about Santa or parternity. Or the first time a child learns that u can't leave a treasured toy in the front yard -- someone will walk by and steal it. Or a teen realizing that everyone will not treat them like mom and dad, so people won't trust them or give them a second chance.

The discovery of the ignorance of their leaders.

When I was 16, a local politician accosted a visiting dignitary from South America and assumed he was from a neighboring tribe when it was clearly evident by the unique way he was dressed that he was from a different country altogether!

So much for knowledge, experience and maturity in politicians, let alone honesty.

I think people lose their innocence when they realize that their parents are human too. When my grandfather died and I saw my big, strong dad cry like a little boy, that started it for me. Also, when you get your heart broken for the first time, and you see that relationships are more complicated than they used to be.

People can lose their innocence by prostituting their VALUES, ie. by dishonouring or betraying their own beliefs, or by betraying a life long friend or a best friend; by declaring failure when more effort would make it a success; by pretending to be something you are NOT which hurts someone, etc.
