I have a very thin waist, fairly large hips and thick legs. What clothes would look best on me? Can I wear flowy skirts? Are tight jeans a bad choice? What would make my legs look thinner and emphasize my tiny waist?

People keep saying "empire-waist tops," but I think that's completely wrong! It will elongate my legs, but it will completely de-emphasize by most important feature; which is my small waist.

My Grandmother always said, and I quote, "A woman wears clothes tight enough to show she's woman but loose enough to show she's a lady."

I think you can wear flowy skirts just not too short, you can have it knee lenght or below. Are your legs that big? because if yes, maybe you can wear jeans that are low waist and booth leg types, so it will not give much emphasis to your legs but to your waits. You can wear all low waist pants, jeans or skirts you can even put an accent to your waits by putting floral or knitted belts. Also try long skirts whatever the cut and material is. There is a new trend (actually it's old) the flowy skort (skort for skirt and shorts in one). It looks like a skirt really but it has a partition in between like a short. I just don't know if it's a trend in your place but from where I am it looks good even to big body types. You can also try sexy and midrib tops so divert their attention from your legs.

A tucked blouse with an interesting belt or special buckle will help with the waist -- have a color difference between the blouse and skirt or pants, wear a lighter color or pattern on top. You're looking to create definition and separation.

Wear skirts cut on the bias and cut below the knees -- that way you'll draw the eye down from the hips with a little bit of flow. Don't go overboard with the flow, though, or it will look llike you have a cascade coming down off the hips. Below the knee will make your legs look longer. Concentrate on longer, not thinner.

Tight jeans are decidedly a bad choice, as are capris -- they're going to make your bottom half look like a lopsided diamond. Go with a little bit of flare at the bottom, and long enough so that they cover a little bit of shoe, which will help lengthen the leg.

Empire Waist dresses, and tops. I always where an empire waist top with tailored pants, or dark boot cut jeans. Avaoid skirts that are tight all the way down like the mermaid style.

I'm in your boat. except i also have a long torso and short legs. first of all, you buy clothes to fit your biggest part.
so if you want to wear a button up, you have to buy a large, and then have the sides tailored to fit you. next, when you buy jeans, fit them to your hips and butt. then have the waist tailored to fit you. i don't know about you, but i can wear a good pair of jeans for a couple years before i need a new pair so spending a little extra on tailoring isn't a bad idea. watch "What not to Wear" on TLC. I learn so much from that show.

I'd say SLIMMING pants...there's a difference between TIGHT and SLIMMING. Slimming fit you good but aren't tight one bit. Tight is not being able to button them or looking like you're wearing a ten-year-old's pants. Flowy skirts are OK...I guess. Whatever you feel nice in. :)
