Depo-Provera
How it works:
Every three months, your doctor gives you and injection of progestin, a synthetic hormone that suppresses ovulation and interferes with implantation.
It is 97% effective. You only have to think about birth control 4 times a year. It contains no estrogen, so you don't have to worry about blood clots, and other risks associated with birth control pills. There is a new version called Depo-SubQ Provera104 that contains one-third less progestin than the original Depo, so side effects have been drastically reduced.
You may have irregular periods during the first three to six months of use, and it takes an average of 10 months for your periods to return after your last shot, so this method is not ideal if you want to become pregnant within a year or so after discontinuing use.
Weight gain:
Women put on an average of 5.5 pounds during the first year of use. (Which does not calculate to "massive weight gain")
The shot is also associated with bone loss because it shuts down ovulation, resulting in low levels of estrogen, a hormone that protects bone. As a result, the FDA has restricted the use of Depo to no more than two years at a time.

I personally miss Depo Provera. I am on Seasonale now, but would much prefer the Depo. I had to stop it because my insurance would not cover it. I have really really really painful periods, so even 4 a year is to many for me. As far as not having a period, the depo (and the seasonale for that matter) prevent the egg from being implanted in the uterus, if there is no egg, there is no uterine lining, so there is nothing to shed. so not having a period is not a big deal. with any type of birth control, you need to first of all speak with your ob/gyn. make a consultation appointment, or let them know when you schedule you want extra time. she/he can answer all your questions, and help you make the best decision for yourself. also you can check sites like webmd, for more info. good luck and God bless!

One of my friends, Laura, has the shot every 3 months and loves it, no side effects whatsoever.
I like Seasonale, you only get your periods 4 times a year! It's great!!!!!!!

EVERYONE i have known has told me they gained massive weight from the shot, but each person's body is different, so you may not have this same side-effect.

my mom was on it.. i'm pretty sure they had to take her off cuz it causes bone marrow loss or something like that I'M NOT SURE.... but whatever it was they made her get back on the pill. it does make you not have your period BUT she said she did sometimes leak unexpectadly... i dont know about weight gain... shes good with staying the same but i think she might have went up 5 but then lost it soon after... other then that she said it worked good.
hope this helped!
