On August 25, 2001, R&B singer Aaliyah(last name Haughton) died when her plane crash in the Bahamas. Aaliyah was leaving from a music video shoot taking place in the Bahamas at the time. Some people blame the fact that the plane was overstuffed with baggage and the fact that the pilot took drugs while flying and was not licensed.

Aaliyah traveled to the Bahamas in August 2001 to film the "Rock the Boat" video with director Hype Williams. On August 25, 2001, at 6:45 pm, just after filming was completed, Aaliyah and 7 friends boarded a Cessna 402 small aircraft en route to Opa-Locka Airport in a suburb of Miami. The journey would have taken approximately 1 hour travel time. Instead, the plane nosedived while taking off and crashed in a marsh on the south side of the departure end of runway 27. All nine people aboard, including Aaliyah, the pilot and the other seven passengers, were killed.

As others have said, she died in a place crash. She had just finished acting in "Queen of the Damned" as Akasha. At the time of the accident, she hadn't finished doing her dialogue replacement for the movie, so her brother (Rashad Haughton) finished it off.
Tragic.. It must have been hard for him. Aaliyah was the perfect one for the role.. It's a little ironic when you think about it.

In a plane crash shortly after it left the Bahamas. I think it exploded because it was carrying too much weight.
