Go into the control panel, and look for the system icon. (If you do not see it, switch to "Classic View"). Double click and select the Hardware tab. Click on the Device Manager

Look under sound, video and game controllers. Your sound card should be listed there. It will probably have either a red X or a yellow exclamation point on the icon.

Right click and uninstall the device.

Reboot the PC and it should redetect and reinstall the sound card.

Sounds like a driver problem to me. Have the computer search for new hardware from the control panel. If that doesn't work the best thing to do is restore your computer to an earlier point in time. Normally windows sets restore points where the registry is backed up and often problems can be overcome by restoring to two or three days or weeks before the current date. Just remember if you made changes or added programs in the last few days they might have to be reinstalled but then sometimes new installs or new downloads can cause just that problem you have.

easy fix = restore your computer to an earlier time it was working. This worked for me about a week ago.
