I never believed this song was in any way connected to drugs.Jimmy Webb, this song's writer was the son of a Baptist minister. The singer, Richard Harris, was a serious and respected actor (Dumbledore in 1st two Harry Potter movies), so I couldn't believe he would sing a drug related song.Jimmy's mother died when he was a young teen, which is a traumatic experiece. This song was written when he was 20. My opinion is that this song was about his mom: A young boy (spring of his life),keeping in his mind the fresh, new, memories (green icing)(parted pages, pressed by the iron) that he hopes he'll always have.(As in saving a special rose or a lock of hair pressed in the pages of a book). His mom is the cake. The icing is memories of her, which are gradually getting hazy, blurred, fading and they can't ever be replaced.(never have the recipe again)Yellow cotton dress his mom wore when she took him to the park and she sat on the grass enjoying the spring day..

Another song for me: He knows he will go on with his life, love, laugh, find success, experience failure. His mom probably told him to never look directly at the sun because it would ruin his eyes.(My mom told me not to but I peeked anyway)So he never let her catch him peeking at the sun.He will take his life etc. : Again, he will strive to achieve goals, he will win some and lose some.He will love, raise a family. The worship in their eyes etc. His children will look up to him when they are young, but that worship typically disappears as a child gets to be a teenager. But no matter how many people he loves in his lifetime, his mom remains in his heart as number one. When he thinks of her, he will still be asking the age-old question we all ask when our loved one dies. WHY ??

Some people think it described an acid trip. The green icing flowing down was the trees around the park melting while experiencing a trip. The cake might have been the vehicle for the drugs. There were other examples I read somewhere from someone that was hip on the eras drug slang, you might be able to locate it on google.

Another take on it was metaphoric. The cake left out in the rain was a happy memory of a relationship experience in the park that was fading from memory. Never having the recipie again meant that particular feeling or memory could never be replicated.

Personally I think there are elements of both, the acid trip inspiring the metaphors.

Macarthur Park Song

Most of this information is available on W iki pedia. Jimmy Webb, the writer of the song, was dating a girl and used to meet her in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles for lunch. They would see people in the park having weddings and birthdays with their birthday and wedding cakes. When he broke up with the girl he was thinking about how his memories of meeting the girl in MacArthur Park were all going to fade like the cake that they had seen left out in the rain. There was no way to recapture the memories since they weren't together anymore ("never have that recipe, again") and something that had been beautiful was going to melt and wash away.

Later in the song he is lamenting that he will have other women in his life but he will always remember the girl and wonder if she was his one, true love.

I gotta tellya, I love that song, always did, and don't have the slightest clue what it means. Maybe it doesn't mean a thing. I don't know anyone who ever put any meaning into it that wasn't in a drug reference. If you have the meaning, by all means share!

To me, the song has always been about a broken relationship, a lost love, because it (the cake) was neglected and /or forgotten about by him, "left out in the rain". "I ll never have that recipe again" means that he has lost the one true love of his life.
