Well, for one thing is that he took the name Mark Twain from when he worked on a river boat. That actually is the measurement for depth of water. He was born and raised in Hannibal, Missouri and that is where most of his books are set. There is a cave there (now bears his name) that is where the kids and Indian Joe had their run in. Many people in his books were kids he knew growing up, but of course he changed their names. His real name is Samuel Clemons. Hannibal is only an hour away from us and we have been many times. Stay at a motel that is in the historic down town, his home he was born in and raised in is less than a block from where we stay. The cave is about 7 miles from where we stay.

Certainly the bulk of his books ("Tom Sawyer", "Huck Finn", "Life on the Mississippi") recall his growing up in that part of the world.

His later books challenge an unfair God and His cruelty dealt upon those whom He supposidely loves ("The Mysterious Stranger")

He traveled and wrote about his travels. Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer were about things he saw in his childhood and riverboat days. He did go to California and saw Calavaras County. He traveled to Hawaii and England.

He also was the first author to use the typewriter.
