I NEVER went to mine because it was (1) too formal, (2) WAAY too expensive, and (3) TOO DARN FAR AWAY!...

My son wants to go to his prom, but living here in San Bernardino County(California), I just told him "NO!" , because of what I went through back in '88(I went to a different high school back then)...

Am I crazy for banning him from prom because of this?...

Besides, he CAN'T dance(not even Paula Abdul can help him!)!...I can't afford the limo, and he's wearing jeans(which are STRICTLY banned here in town...

Help me by telling me your good and bad things about your prom experiences(NOTE: NO after-prom sex talk, OK???...)...

Thanks for your cooperation...

Nowadays, proms are ALWAYS held in such stupid, far-off places like(since we live in San Bernardino County) the Queen Mary cruise ship in Long Beach(a 90-minute drive via limo--ONE WAY!)...

Besides, to that one person who described his prom in such sexual terms, THAT'S the reason why I'm NOT letting my son go to his prom!...

NO WAY!!!...

Hey, Michaela,

As a proud 1988 graduate of Duarte High School, I too stayed home instead of going to prom...and I turned out normal!!!

I'm gonna have to check my yearbook to see where ours was in that year, but I do know that it was quite a trip for most of us...

I'm in total agreement w/ your position about this situation...most of you young folks think that the prom is for dancing to such songs like Chris Brown's "Run It",or worse, "Opposites Attract" by Paula Abdul!...and then afterward, getting to lose your purity in the back of the limo!...

And the strictly-enforced rule of strapless dresses for the girls and tuxedos for the guys is RIDICULOUS!!!...What's wrong w/ Levi's 501s for the guys and Old Navy khaki pants for the girls?...

Finally, the price of a prom is going up too fast each year...back in '88, it was $75/couple and $150-300/"going stag"(that is, going by yourself!)...

Good luck and stick to your choices!

i don't do dances either, but you cannot ban your son from going to HIS prom. the prom is supposedly the culmination of his adolescent years. ultimately it is his choice. i'm not going to mine because i don't want to and no one can force me to, but if he chooses to go, that's up to him. besides, it's a good experience for the well-situated and non-awkward.

as for your last line, i thought the only good thing about the prom was the almost guaranteed intercourse! i mean, why the hell else would you go?

he doesn't need a limo and where is his prom anyway? you act like it's in new york or something

i don't think its fair to not let him go to his own prom. i think prom is one of the things that people remember for their entire lives. i haven't gone to prom yet - i'm not old enough - but i do know that if i wasn't allowed to go to my prom i would be pissed.
