Selena Quintanilla Perez, better known as just Selena, was a budding Tejano star, who was kiled just as she was on the verge of breaking through into the mainstream American music market.

In 1995, Selena appeared in a very brief cameo in the Johnny Depp film Don Juan de Marco - if you watch very carefully in the first scene of the film, you'll spot her as a backup mariachi singer.

As Selena worked on her first English language album in early 1995, she and her advisors discovered that her friend and fan club president Yolanda Saldivar was stealing money from the fan club and from the merchandise sales that she was managing on the singer's behalf. On the morning of March 31, 1995, Selena agreed to meet with Saldivar at a Days Inn Motel in Corpus Christi, Texas.

A strange sequence of events occurred - at one point Saldivar claimed she had been recently raped, and Selena drove her to a hospital for evaluation. Eventually, the two women returned to the hotel room, where Selena accused Saldivar of having embezzled money. Saldivar pulled a gun and pointed it at her own head, threatening suicide, then pointed it at Selena. When Selena attempted to leave the room, Saldivar apparently shot the singer in the back. Selena made it to the manager's office, where she identified her assailant, and an ambulance was called, but she died at 1:05 pm from blood loss caused by the shooting. Saldivar was captured after a stand off, and remains in a Texas prison.

In 1997, Jennifer Lopez played Selena in a tribute film that tells the story of the singer's tragic life.
