because that's what is in THEIR head, people tend to think about others what they really mean about themselvs. when they say that , they are saying : do I really love him/her. it's their question and their thought about what they feel. byron katie has done some interesting work on this subject, I think her site is www.thework.com take a peek there it is really enlightening.

it's about getting others (strangers) opinion other than friends to confirm what the asker is really feeling. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes it also helps to get it out online by asking that kind of question and reading other people's answers.

They ask because they want someone else to tell them that the person does or doesn't. They ask because they don't take the time out to figure it out themselves. People ask thinking that oh she is or he is my friend they will tell me.
In all actually most people who tell someone else about another person leaves out a lot of things. No one can tell you about your relationship with a person but you and the person that you are with. If you have to ask someone else, then you need to either look at yourself or look at them.
You will find your answer!!

Sometimes, love is blind. It's easy for a female's feelings to get caught up, and when this happens, our brains become almost paralized. Therefore, we resort to askin' strangers their opinions, after giving them small details about our potential-lover, to see what their thoughts are. It's easy to be on the outside and looking in, cuz if you're on the inside tryin' to look out, you tend to only see what you want to see.

Good point. If they have to ask, then the answer is probably 'no.' Unless the person asking is just really insecure and needs to be assured.
