A lack of calcium. Try adding skim milk, yogurt,etc to your diet.
When the cramp. twitch & spasm comes, sit and point your toes as far away and as long as you can (Your calf and thigh and hamstring muscle should be fully engaged). This should relieve the cramp. Also, use a pain reliever to help with the pain.

Any of the following could cause these symptoms: sprained/strained muscles (from over exercising) A pinched nerve/disk in the spine.
Remedies: cal/mag formulas are great for easing muscle cramping and twitching, etc, so get onto calcium and magnesium formula.
Spinal - go and get a chiropractor to take a look and find out if there's a pinched nerve or disk problem (he can then fix this)

Dehydration is the first thing but also low Potassium is also a leading reason this happens. Eat more bannannas or take some vitamins. Also if you are taking anything like Creatine Monohydrate or anything with it as an ingridient this could be the cause as it will dehydrate you if you don't drink enough fluid. A friend of mine on my wrestling team in college went binge drinking during senior weekend but kept taking his supplements and his entire system siezed! Turns out he was just dehyrated.

Generally this problem emerges from excess calcium or insufficient dietary magnesium. Milk consumption, for instance, can contribute to this unpleasant muscle problem. Every muscle in the body uses calcium to contract, and magnesium to relax. When there is too much calcium - believe it or not the American diet has way to much calcium and much to little magnesium - and not enough magnesium, contractive conditions like hypertension, constipation, and finally cramping and twitching can result. At the very least do not take calcium supplements! They do nothing to build bone, and worse: may contribute to osteoporosis, hypertension, certain cancers, ostearthritis, and many more ailments.....

I've always been told that if you eat a banana before going to bed, it will help with the leg cramps. It has potassium and that does help. If it is a big problem, and if it happens at night, you should ask your doctor about RLS (restless leg syndrom)

I agree with AngelEyes, RLS. If it happens when you are sitting in the same position for a while, going to sleep or after a long day on your feet, and its an uncomfortable feeling in your lower back and a sensation that feels like your leg has to jerk uncontrollably to relieve the sensation, that is what it is. There is a medication for it if it bothers you enough. Ask your doctor about it.

may be an electrolyte imbalance. i would suggest getting blood work done to verify. could also be restless leg syndrome. might try talking to your dr about that. sometimes quinine orally is given at bedtime for this as well.
