This depends on the type of website it is and how big the website is. For example, Yahoo (US version) is so big that it has its own mainframe computer with its own servers and storage area. Therefore it is kept (with several backups) on a mainframe computer in some office building where Yahoo is based.

However for games, their websites usually have serveral servers keeping the sites throughout the world so anyone could access it from their area with optimal performance.

For smaller webpages such as personal MySpace and Geocities pages using a certain service, the webpages are kept on one Geocities mainframe with several hundreds of thousands of other's webpages also created through the same service. Since the bandwidth of these sites and size are not demanding, it does not require its own server or mainframe.

On Servers. Companies like Yahoo have lots of huge servers that store vast amonts of information. When you connect to the internet and view a web-page it is being delivered to your computer from one or more of these servers. A server is in effect a basic computer that has a huge memory, it just stores stuff and sends it out when requested.

Even a basic server is expensive so most websites are stored on someone else's computer. It's only really viable for big companies or those with lots of money or specialising in computers to have theor own servers.

Because these servers are vulnerable to attack they're usually housed in very secure locations, often deep underground and most decent organisations will have at least one back up of everything that they can switch to immediately anything goes wrong.

Most web sites are hosted by a company with a server and a ton of memory space in their computers to hold people's websites. These computers are running and connected to the internet 24/7 so the websites will always be available when other people go to them. Almost all hosts charge monthly or yearly fees to their clients. On web servers, some may be main frames, but most aren't. Some websites are kept on regular old dekstops running special software. Others are kept on "dedictaded" servers, basicly souped up computers that "serve" information to users.

I website is made up of various codes that are stored on a server or personal computer.

Pretty much you could make a webpage on your computer and allow other people to visit it, but it would have very low banwitdth compared to sites like yahoo.
