I have been on birth control for 7 years, on the patch for one, and since I stopped I have not had regular periods. I used to have a 28 day cycle, now it can range from 35 days to 50 days. I have been off the patch for 6 months now. I am concerned because my husband and I would like to try to be come pregnant within the next 6 months.

It is normal to have menstrual irregularities after so long using hormonal birth control. You haven't had a period for 8 years (bleeding while on hormonal birth control is technically "withdrawal bleeding"--very different from the perspective of your body); it may take your body a full year to remember how to do it! Rarely, too, hormonal birth control causes permanent sterility. Your doctor should have discussed the risks with you before she/he wrote you the first prescription.

I would strongly suggest you read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler. You will be able to get a better idea of what is going on with your body and your cycles.

A lot of women have the same sort of issues as you are, after they come off hormonal birth control. I'm going to provide you with the link to a trying to conceive forum where I know others have the same issues as you. It's full of supportive women with boundless knowledge about these issues. I learnt so much there that I doubt I would have learnt otherwise.

I was on birth control for 5 years. When I got off of it last summer I didn't have my period...ever. Dr. put me on provera to try to trigger my cycle. I started. If you don't have another period after that and you want to conceive he could put you on clomid which makes you ovulate!

Best of luck...speak to your gyno about these meds!!!!
