I don't think so. My Mom has had her golfish for years as well. I found this on the web:

Goldfish Longevity:
In addition, goldfish have been known to live into their 30's at least. Life expectancies from 10-20 years are normal for well cared for fish. The oldest captive goldfish on record was Tish who is in the Guiness Book of World Records. His owner, Peter Hand of England, won him at the fair in 1956. Tish died the first week of August, 1999 so he was at least 43 years old (probably 44 since most carnival goldfish are about 4 months to a year old). Tish only grew to 4.5 inches long and was silver. Since 4.5 inches is not that long, either Tish was stunted (he spent many years in small bowls before moving into a tank), or he was a fancy variety of goldfish. Peter Hand's mother, Hilda Hand, said after Tish's death, "I am very sad....Over the years we have become very close and I could sense if he was happy or not." The oldest living goldfish is also in England. As of 2003, "Goldie" is also 43 years old and will be in the next edition of Guiness.

Goldfish can live much longer than people think. Maintaining healthy water quality, monitoring them for signs of illness, and feeding a healthy and varied diet can really go a long ways to ensuring you pet goldfish lives a long happy life.

Here are some tips to help your pet live a long, happy and healthy life:

Fancy goldfish do best with 10-15 gallons of water each and single tailed (common) goldfish do best with 15-20 gallons of water each. Many petstores sell test kits so that you may test your water or they can even test it for free or for a small charge most of the time. You are looking for your test readings to be 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, and 10-30 Nitrate is pretty safe. This pretty much means your water is healthy. There is a lot more to water chemistry and water quality but if you want to look that up Ill leave it to you.

Its a good idea to feed a varied diet. A good staple diet can be Omega One goldfish pellets or Hikari goldfish pellets. I have used the Hikari Oranda Gold for all my goldfish, whether they are orandas or not. Omega One is a decently priced favorite among goldfish keepers.

As a treat, I feed my goldfish:
Super Soft Krill Pellets, Super Soft Spirulina Pellets, freeze dried or frozen bloodworms, freeze dried baby shrimp, lightly cooked zucchini, orange slices, and once a week I feed them peas to help "clear them out". Avoid Wardley, Tetra Fin, most cheap generic brands. Just look at the ingrediants in Wardley flakes compared to Omega one and you will see why right off the bat. Those are junk foods.

I hear people commonly say, "well Ive had my goldfish in a bowl for a year and its just fine!". Well, its just not so. There are problems going on that the owner doesnt even know about. A goldfish that lives one year is not a victory and not some accomplishment to brag about because you kept a poor fish alive in a bowl for so long. Do your research and you will see why.

Goldfish can be your companion for many years and can be quite an enjoyable pet. They can even be taught to eat from your hand. Try it. :)

And like the poster above said, yes I believe the name of the goldfish was Tish or something like that. It did live a very long time and that fish holds the record.

Quoting the article linked below "The world's oldest captive goldfish has died peacefully in his bowl, 43 years after he was won as a prize at a funfair". The fish bowl looks way too small to me!!

my auntie had a goldfish that was about 15 years old, it grew to the size of its tank just about and she had to buy it a bigger tank, it kept getting bigger (about 30cm), until she couldn't fit a bigger tank and it couldn't turn around in it's tank.
That was one fish not to be flushed when it died :)
