New Mexico (retirement state), California (beautiful state)if you plan right.....
Moving back to California this month, but the cost of housing would shock your shoes off. Ive already decided to retire in Georgia, with the money I'm spending in Ca this year 20 years from now I will be able to live in some of the best neighborhoods in Georgia...so that the plan....Good Luck

My answer would be Florence, Alabama. Situated in Northwest Alabama the town is known for it's very low crime rate. Also being in the south you have great weather. It's far enough north that you can get a snow or two and there is some cold weather but overall pretty moderate. I have not only lived there but I will return there to retire myself. Cost of living is quite low and it's wonderfully easy to get around in traffic as there is no traffic. There is plenty of restaurants of the local flavor as well as the chains. The Tennessee River runs right through the area and along with Natches Trace provides some of the best natural beauty of the land. The area consist of four small cities (Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia). If you crave the big city Huntsville is 65 miles to the east and Memphis is about an hour and half drive as is Nashville, Tn and Birmingham, AL. That's my recommendation .. been there done that will do it again.

North Carolina has very reasonable Real Estate prices, great hospitals, and retirement communities. It is also close to both the mountains and the beach. I used to live in Florida, but I have lived in North Carolina for about a year now. If I can afford it, I want to retire in Florida, but that is still about 35 years away.

Why do you feel that Florida is one of the best states for retirement. Just because everyone else goes there when they are old doesn't mean you have to as well.

Texas,,, deep south, McAllen to Brownsville, actually I am hoping to retire to Florida which is my home state. The weather here and there is just about the same. However everything is less expensive here in Texas.

Arizona, Florida is way too humid.
Arizona would be my ideal place to retire, it's warm year round, no humidity which will help with my arthritis, and it's absolutely beautiful there. I don't know about moving there, but I spend alot of time there. My son is stationed in Tucson, AZ so it makes it easy for me to visit.

Arizona, people retiring here are nuts about Arizona. I don't get it myself but I think the dry heat of Arizona is easier to take that then moist heat of Forida. I personally prefer Florida it's the only subtropical reigon in the continental US.

Colorado. You can ski and golf on the same day many times. There is a lot of beautiful scenery. It is near the center of the country so easy to visit from anywhere. I do live here, and I don't think I am moving.

Here in Austin, Texas, we have a large and beautiful retirement community called Sun City. You get beautiful houses, your own shopping center, huge golf course, and you get to drive around on golf carts. When my grandparents came to visit they stayed there and absolutely loved it.
