Disney was able to Cross Promote products to the baby boom generation through music (The Ballad of Davey Crockett was on the radio the hat was mentioned in the song) Television, (Walt Disney style - the medium was in it's infancy and targeted the average American family who could now afford a television) Movies and even print media.

I can't remember the exact advertising for the hats, but it was a very popular television show in the 1950's. All little boys wanted to be Davy Crockett so of course, they wanted a Davey Crockett hat.
