If so, what did you think of the place? Can you recommend any good bars etc?

What are the general prices there for food / drinks / gas cookers etc?

Cheers,
G

I used to live in Hamburg suburbs couple years ago as an exchange student.
Beautiful city, one of the best in Germany!
A lot of young germans speak English, ask them about best local bar. Prices for food are very similar to here in U.S.

Gas is about $5.67/galon.

Euro 7 ($8.84) pays for a liter of beer.

A liter of mineral water will cost, on average, about Euro 5.62 ($7.10).

Soft drinks, including the popular cola-orange mix Spezi, runs at about Euro 6.59 ($8.33).

Great places to eat downtown:

Atlantic-Restaurant
An der Alster 72-79 , Hamburg, Germany

"Rocco"
Wohlwillstraße 29, St. Pauli, Hamburg, 20359 Germany

Bar Hamburg

Alt Hamburger Aalspeicher

Restaurant Wildgänse

For Sightseenig I recommend:

Rathaus (City Hall)
+49 40 428 31 2009
Rathausmarkt, Hamburg, 20095 Germany
Erected in 1897, the impressive, neo-Renaissance town hall is a symbol of Hamburg's wealth and autonomy. Its 111m-long north facade is dominated by a huge tower decorated with bronze statues.

Reeperbahn
Hamburg, 20359
Germany
Perhaps the single most famous street in Germany, the Reeperbahn is full of cafes, bars and restaurants; theatres, cabarets and clubs.

It has been many many years...like 10 since I have been there and alot has changed I am sure...It is a beautiful city. The best bars back then were along the coast. Prices of food and drinks were kinda high, but then the cost of living in Germany is alot higher than here.
It would be a good place to visit.
