I'll start by saying I'm Irish.

The link to the map I have given shows that Ireland is an island separate from Britain and not part of it.

The Republic of Ireland (the larger part of Ireland)see the map, is also politically separate.

The Northern part (The six Counties of Northern Ireland) is governed by the UK (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)

Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales, and some small islands e.g. The Isle of Man, the Isles of Scilly and Shetland).

The confusion arises from the terminology that the British use. This is someway explained at the second site

Nope -- and probably never will be. Great Britain is an island, and Ireland is an entirely separate island, across the Irish Sea from Great Britain. Ireland IS, however, part of the United Kingdom, which comprises England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
Did you know that Ireland did not fight in WW2? Many Irish men and women went to England and joined up there, but Ireland never declared war on Germany, Italy or Japan.
