Not necessarily, but it does help a lot to have one or the other. But if you don't, and you take the ACT or SAT and make a decent score on it, there are lots of 4-year colleges that will accept you anyway just as they would a home schooled student. They might put conditions on it or have specific policies you have to follow, and not all of them will do it at all, but it never hurts to ask. All they can do is say no.

At a community college you might be able to take some classes as long as you're not working on a degree.

you can have a ged or a high diploma it don't matter
