Stat counters are very rudimentary - and if it is visible to visitors, the site looks very amateurish.
Stat counters only give you the "how many" came to the site, but not what they did to your site, what pages they accessed, how long they stayed in your site, what day they accessed your site, what browsers they used, what screen resolutions, where did they come from and who are your referrers, and other metrics. These metrics are essential in:
- understanding how customers use your site
- the type of content they want (so you can build more of those content)
- how effective your marketing strategies and which sites bring in the most traffic
- how your sales are going
I suggest checking out and applying for Google http://www.google.com/analytics/ . It is open for invitation only but you can request an invite. It is free, yet very sophisticated. Some of its features such as funnel analysis and link analysis (what links on your page do visitors click on -- gives the number of times a hyperlink was clicked on) are found in more expensive web stats software such as Hitbox HBX (license fee is around $20K per annum).

You should be able to access all of that information from your website hoster. If not, you should find a host that has better features. While counters show you how many people have gone to your website, information provided by the ISP gives you much more detailed information.

You have to make a counter. Some isps provide free counters, like Comcast. Otherwise it takes some cgi programming, not fun.

Get a counter. Do a search for "website counters". I believe you can get them free.
Here's one:
