I ask because of the song, "Back in the USSR," were they envy Russians because of their girls.

'Back in the USSR' was Paul McCartney's idea of a little joke - Chuck Berry (to whom the song is partly an homage) had a song called 'Back in the USA' and there was an advertising campaign in the UK at the time that went 'I'm backing the UK'. While playing around with the similarities between the two, he decided to change it, for slightly satiric reasons, to 'Back in the USSR'.

The bulk of the song being about women is probably a reference to the Beach Boys and songs like 'California Girls' (of which it seems almost a direct parody).

The Beatles never played Russia while they were together as a group, but of course Paul McCartney has been there since and recorded an album especially for the Russian market in the days of Glastnost. It's name, 'Snova S SSSR' was just a translation of that song name. He has since released albums called 'Back in the USA' and 'Back in the World'. Perhaps he ought to give it a rest by now...

Of course, one imagines that they had met a few Russian (or Ukranian or Georgian) girls... They certainly had the opportunity to meet whomever they wanted!
