The four major manufacturer's of laptops are Toshiba, IBM, Dell and HP/Compaq. They have all been manufacturing laptops for many years. All four make quality products. Toshiba and IBM (now Lenovo) tend to make the most reliable products. Both focus on the corporate marketplace, as do HP and Dell. Any of these manufacturers would make a good choice.
You might also consider an older laptop. Many older laptops that you find from the companies that sell refurbished laptops come from leasing companies and corporations. Decent units can be purchased for $300 to $500.
Figure out what features you want and then look at the above manufacturer's websites to see what deals they are offering. If you don't care about battery life and your laptop will see limited use then you might even consider refurbished. Many of these units were formerly used by corporations and are great values.
You can type "used laptops" for refurbished and "discount laptop" into google and check out the companies that appear.

I have an Apple computer. It is wonderful! They are much better computers than your average windows based computer. The operating system is not that difficult if you are not familiar with it. A computer literate person could figure it all out in a couple of days. The new intel chips in the macs make them much better, and a lot of the software now saves in files that PC's recognize. For instance, you can get Microsoft Office for Mac, and those all transfer. Your word documents save as .doc files and so forth throughout all the programs. This makes it very easy when sending files to other people or just other computers. www.apple.com is the website. They have computers in the price range that you are wanting. You can also find an apple store near where you live by going to that web site. You can go to one of these and they can show you anything you would ever need to know about a Mac! Happy shopping!

You wont find an IBM/Lenovo for that cheap, but you may not need something that high end. Dell is top choice. For the money the equipment is good and you get alot for your money. If you dont intend to move it around alot, go with a PC. They dont hold thier value as good, but they are cheaper to upgrade and repair.
