The emergency brake on most cars activate the rear brake shoes or if you have 4 wheel disc brakes then it activates the rear disc pads.If a car is driven with this engaged then it will more than likely wear down the shoes or the brake pads. This can cause the pads or shoes to wear out completely or wear more quickly. The fact that you stated that you have to pull the emergency brake further to engage tells me that there is some wear. This means a layer of the brakes are worn and therefore you have a bigger gap between the pads and disc or the shoes and drum.My next concern is driving with emergency brake engaged is creating heat on the brake drum or rotors,This could have caused them to warp,It is hard to say what kind of damage was done.If you hear a squealing, whistle or have a shimmy to develope,I would have the pads or shoes replaced and at the same time,It is cheap to have the rotors or shoes turned which will more than likely take out any warpage and give you a smooth surface for your brake.

the rear brakes, if it has drums, are royally ******. if it has discs, the services brakes are still good. i suggest finding a dead straight, unpopulated country road, getting it up to about 50MPH and just standing on the brakes as hard as you can. if it violently throws you against the seatbelt, the acual service brakes(the ones that stop you when you push the pedal) are still good. if it starts to get squirrely WITHOUT any screeching, yer on fronts only. Let OFF the pedal if the car starts to wander or try to spin, do NOT steer. Hold the steering wheel perfectly straight. DO NOT do this with ANY traffic and with NO cops around. you could also use an abandoned airstrip or maybe a dragstip to do it. DISCLAIMER: I am NOT responsible for damages should you wreck the car doing this, or get a ticket. I'm not the one pressing the pedal, I'm not the one paying for anything

As long as your brakes still work O.K. you don't have to worry.
The emergency brake uses the same pads on the rear brakes that you use when you apply the regular brakes. All your wife did was wear a little of the pads off. They will have to be replaced a little sooner but no big deal.

Sure the most that can happen is that you loss a little pad on the the brake pad. If you have drum brakes, 90% of the time they only wear so far. I would venture to say that 80% of the cars on the road back brakes hasn't worked for years.
Good Luck

Overheating of brakes to the point which they smoke and for a lengthy period of time is very damaging to both the pads and the rotors. Chances are both will need to be replaced. The rotors will be glazed and/or warped, thus not restorable, and the pads while they may not show visible damage have probably been stressed and weakened. The pads may breakdown and crumble in due time.
The same goes for drum brakes.
See a shop.

most likely you need to have brake work done soon..if not sooner..
most likely either the drums or the rotors ( depending what you have) got so hot they must have heat cracks in them...most likely you need new ones...including new brake pads because the extreme heat most likely destroyed them too..
and if your going to have a garage do the work, make sure you tell them the story so they can check the system out and make the proper diagnose...instead of just saying you need a brake job..you need to tell them this because even the brake fluid should be replace because of the high heat the system went through..
Good Luck
and be easy on her...make her give you extra kisses or something ..but do not get mad at her..

Should be fine, other than a little abnorman wear on your break pads, but you will need to have the emergency brake cable adjusted.

Your car is fine. Your emergency brake is damaged.
Don't yell at her too much. She's not the only one who's done that.
