I have a medium sized tattoo about 6x4 inches on my left hip, and I am an allied health professional. First, a good tattoo salon won't work on you if they smell alcohol on your breath. They have you fill out forms asking if you are under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. Second, it recommended that you take 800mg of Ibuprofen, which is 4 of the 200mg pills you buy at the store, and drink a lot of water the day you go in. You want your skin to be in it's best condition. Not only does alcohol make you bleed, but it's hard on your skin too because it dehydrates you. I personally don't believe it helps with the pain. You must have to be passed out drunk for that. The only thing that hurts some is the outline, and it depends on where you get it. The bonier places like ankles or ribs hurt more so that's something to consider. Think carefully about what you're getting because it will be with you always. It should mean something to you. Most of all, they should open the needle in front of you, wear gloves, and the place should be clean. Have fun!

This is what I have to say about tattoos. Honey, you can get Hepatitis C from it. It is the most rampant cause of cirrhosis of the liver. There is a treatment for Hepatitis C, but only 50% of those infected will respond to given treatment; the rest get liver disease and die. I also just got my blood drawn yesterday to see if I have Hepatitis C. You see we just found out 4 days ago that my husband has it and that I could also have it because I have slept with him. It's no small matter. I'm sitting here scared wondering what the results will be. I hope my test results come back negative. Please pray for me. I also hope for your sake that you choose not to get the tattoo; it's just not worth it. :(
Additional Note: A lot of people say it's fine if you get it done at a sanitary professional place. What they don't tell you is it doesn't matter how sanitary it is because part of the ink that is used goes back into the ink vials. To show you what I mean...imagine drinking out of a straw. Part of the liquid in the straw goes back into the glass when you are finished. It may be a very small amount; however, it is the same concept with the clean needles and ink vials when people get tattoos. Once you get Hepatitis C you have to get interferon shots 3 times a week for 6-18 months and there is no guarantee that it will work or that you won't relapse. I sure hope my test comes back negative. I will just hate it if it doesn't, and it's so sad that my husband has this. We have an appointment set up with his doctor in a couple weeks to go over his treatment plan. I think people that get tattoos are crazy!!!!

Yes, because alcohol thins the blood as it dulls the senses. You will also bleed more if you drink soda or tea or anything with a lot of sugar in it. As for the alcohol, some artists will not do a tattoo if you have been drinking. Your best bet is to just go get it done sober. The pain is part of what makes it mean more anyway.

Alcohol thins the blood, so do not drink. And it is not as painful as you may think. It also depends on where you are getting the ink done. Drinking will not dull the pain, it will only make you more relaxed, but harder for the artist to work on you. Any good tattooist will not tattoo you if you have been drinking.

Yes you do in fact bleed more but it does not stop the pain at all. I have five tattoos and I tried getting drunk before and it hurt even more and i ended up throwing up because the pain made me nauseous. If you take a pain killer before hand it does not hurt as bad though. I took some motrin before I got the rest of them and it worked for me

Alcohol does thin the blood, so you do bleed a lot more -- also, you want to make sure you're not permanently marking your body with something you decided to do while twisted... The most painful places -- stomach, anywhere above the shoulders (head, neck), or your elbows. Otherwise, they're not too bad -- actually pretty addicting if you ask me!

Don't drink alcohol or take asprin before you get a tattoo. Tattoos don't hurt that bad. It just feels like someone else is scratching a mosquito bite on you ... but won't stop. It gets annoying.

It is true about thinning the blood. Some tatto places will not give you one if they think you are drunk. When I got mine, I was stone sober. I'm actually a pretty big wimp with a very low pain threshhold. It did not hurt as bad as I was expecting it to. I got mine on my lower back. I LOVE it and have not regretted it for a moment.

It's going to hurt no matter what... if you drink, it won't hurt during...but it will after.
Words of advice, however...
Never get a tattoo while intoxicated. N'less you like, have someone with you to make sure you don't go drunken crazy and ask for like, a unicorn stabbing a clam, or something.
