Hated it! Stilted dialog, bad acting. Really bad all the way around. I still can't believe Julia Roberts took the part. If you want to see a good movie about the same subject matter dealt with in a much more realistic manner, try to find a little indy picture called "We Don't Live Here Anymore" I watched it a few days ago on HBO and it was excellent. It stars Naomi Watts, Laura Dern, and Mark Ruffalo. I can't remember the name of the other male actor. They play friends and neighbors who kind of "swap partners" only it doesn't turn out well for anyone. It shows the true fallout from adultery. I hated in Closer that the characters were so slimy and changed their minds every other scene about who they loved or didn't love. Real life isn't that simple.

I saw a sneak preview of this film and thought it would be good but was stunned by its unique flavor and strong character arcs that leaves you wondering if you're watching a Mamet play or a classic film.
The story gets more and more complex and the acting is so superb that it adds a certain believability to it that would lack with a less reputable cast. Jude Law is as always sensational as a variant of his Alfie charaacter, and Natalie Portman has reached a level of maturity that was truly surprising, not to mention wearing some of the sexiest stripper outfits one can imagine. And Clive Owen is a perfect match for Jude that turns into a perfect ego **** match that creates so much delightful drama that you wonder how far they will push the edge. There are parts of the story that seem a bit far-fetched but its Hollywood baby so with this stellar cast you let a few issues like that fly because you truly are at the edge of your seat wondering how twisted these two pairs of lovers will get.
If you happen to have just finished with a relationship or been cheated on recently id highly advise to bring your heart ready for rampage or lots of tissues but its depth is so provocative that you leave the theatre with so many questions about your own personal life - which personally is what makes the difference between a basic movie and a magical one that literally makes one believe you're watching a true story.
Enjoy and hope you never run into one of these characters.!

The PLAY did when it was first performed almost 10 years ago...
The movie isn't all that, as the director and screenwriter clearly think they are putting on a play rather than directing a film. A couple of good performances, but in general a lot of mis-casting in my book.

it has to be one of the worst movies ever made. It went all around the houses and ended up where it started as a completely pointless film about nothing.
If all relathionships are like that then God help humanity and i will stay single!

I love that movie! I agree that it does show the many sides and paths of a relationship. It also shows the depth someone would go to get revenge. I thought it was realistic all around.

I really hope not!! I'm still a romantic so I want to believe in monogamy and being faithful. I think Jude Law's character was a slimeball- cos he was involved with someone when he met Alice....then left her for Julia Roberts.

I think it's pretty accurate. Not one redeeming quality about any of those characters.
