I think taking an very literal and unquestioning view of Christ's celibacy and being unmarried is just as extreme as those who will suck up everything they hear, like those who believe in all the ideas presented by the Da Vinci Code. Before the stupidly gullible American public jumps to any more conclusions, just look at the facts:
1) As you may know, Jewish heritage is traced through the mother's line (called matrilineality, for those of you who don't know), and because of this, a father's job is to find a suitable wife for his son, so as to continue the family line. It would have been HIGHLY UNLIKELY (not impossible, but unlikely) that Jesus Christ was a bachelor, just based on the tradition of the time.
As Sauniere said to Sophie: would it really be all that bad if Jesus had a wife?
2) The ideas of a "coverup" by the Catholic Church are historical fact, once again. The Council of Nicaea was a real event, where the future of Christianity really was decided. Now, as I am not even 100 years old, I can't tell you what they exactly changed from, but with the Nicene Creed, they sure did set the record straight:
"We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only son of God,
eternally begotten of the father..."
>>Hmm, now if I wanted to make sure nobody questioned Jesus' divinity and celibacy, then I don't think I could say it a much more direct way!
In the book, Dan Brown does not SAY the Holy Grail is underneath the Louvre "Pyramide Inversee"; nor that Solomon's Temple is really a pagan shrine to Mary Magdalene, built to house her remains. Instead, Brown presents raeders with a lot of interesting, thought provoking, and often contoversial ideas, but NO CONCLUSIONS! As Sir Leigh (Teabing, in the book) himself said: What is faith but believing in that which we cannot prove is true? We just have to not concern ourselves with the details. As i mentioned, would it really be all that bad if Jesus had a wife, or even a daughter? For me, that answer is no. After all, would it change his teachings any? No. And so, whatever the Priory believes, whatever Catholics believe, whatever the Jews believe, what happened is what happened, and there's a million different theories as to what exactly happened.

I'm not saying I believe in it......it's not a religion, after all....but I find the idea plausible. So what if he had a wife....There's information supporting it and who said religious leaders can't have wives? My only concern is how Dan Brown could have amassed that information; but according to the forward at the beginning of the book, the spoke with members of the priory and opus dei.
You don't have to agree with any of the evidence as I see you don't anyway. After all, that's what religion is, right? Blind acceptance and faith in a being without any proof or evidence
I don't want a big religious debate, though. The Da Vinci code is, after all, a novel. A work of fiction. I'm not saying that the accepted christian belief is fact, either...I never believed it, and honestly...the Da Vinci code seems more believable than what's accepted today. As far as I can tell, we will never learn the truth so we should stop arguing about it and get on with our lives.
by the way Anonymous....love your answer.

If you mean the Da Vinci Code, it states right on the cover that it's a novel. Check out The Da Vinci Deception, if you have any doubts. Everything the author of the Da Vinci Code relied on to come up with his crazy theories was written at least 400 years after the crucifiction of Christ, whereas the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were all written within the first century... obviously more reliable.

I don't and I'm not alarmed by its assertions, either. Christianity has been attack since its origin and will continue to be so. Jesus even said that we should expect persecution in this world. Plus many of the "facts" in the book are not true, so Dan Brown is not very credible.

The "Da Vice" code?
First of all, learn how to spell "Da Vinci".
Second of all, it's a work of fiction. Don't get all worked up about it.
