bad battery , stator or regulator. Check the battery when its fully charged it should have 12 to 12 1/2 dc volts if it does not charge battery and recheck. If the battery is good start the bike and check the battery while bike is running you should get 13 to 14 dc volts you may have to rev the engine up a little. if you are not getting this you may need to check the regulator or stator. check the stator with the bike running for 25 to 32 volts dc if you get it the regulator. the regulator keeps the volts at 13 to 14 volts at the battery

There is a magnetic wheel on the opposite side of the engine as the clutch called the stator. It acts like an alternator does on a car, except it's built into the motor. It recharges the battery while the engine runs.

My best guess is that there is either a short in the wire that comes from the stator or the stator is bad.

I had a 1980s model 650 Special Yamaha once that wouldn't charge.I replaced the brushes in alternator and solved the problem.Easy to do,and cheapest to start out with, unless battery is bad.Auto Zone,Advance Auto Parts,O'Rilley Auto Parts can test your battery for free.
