I'm a coin dealer and here is the CORRECT answer. A regular 1979 cent with either no mintmark below the date or a "D" below the date is worth only one cent. If it has an "S" below the date, it is a proof coin broken from a proof set. If it is undamaged, it will either be worth about $2 or about $60, depending on what "style" of "S" mintmark it has. There are 2 types...type 1 is a blob that roughly looks like an S, and the more valuable type 2 "S" is crystal clear and easily identifiable as an S. Take it to a local coin shop and he'll tell you which type you have. Hope this info helps you out.
