varies, but the moslems in history even take wives as early as 6-9 yrs, ditto their paedophile phrophet.

For the most cultures in the world, the best times are different for a man and for a woman.
Since most of the cultures are man-based, it is not unusual to have a bride of 20 and a groom of 13. That is because a man could have more chances to mate with younger women, when he has got children at early age. In the same time, the woman has to provide enough supplies for carrying the unborn child, so she has to be mature enough to do it.
In certain cultures, a man go married at age of 18-21, but his bride is barely a woman, at age of 14-15. The reason for this is extended period of reproduction for a woman.
Anyway, in most cultures, both now and in the past, the typical age for marriage is about 21-25 for a man, and 18-21 for a woman. In that age, they are bot mature enough and can provide all neccesities for supporting the children.
Career hunting in modern days have moved the ages to the later, because of lack of time for family planning. It is very frequent custom that bride is almost at the end of her reproduction possibilities, and she rushes to have a child, just to avoid lonelyness in her days of oldness.
Anyway, all relevant psychologists say that the best time for marriage is 18-28 for a woman and 21-35 for a man. The best recommended difference in ages is the man 8 yuears older than a woman (because of matching the pychological development of a person - with that difference, they shoud be compatible).

In the 1600-1800's the average age for marriage for females was between 16-19. A lot of men tended to be a bit older with more of 20-25 age range.
In a more modern society I think you see first marriages for females on average between the ages of 22-26 and the same for guys.

People married younger because death came earlier. Many women died in childbirth, many men and women from illnesses. The pioneers were all children by today's standards. 13, 14, 15, 16 married and bearing children. In many cultures it was the same because of the death rate. 45 was old 50 was ancient. Times were hard. life was hard. In some cultures children were betrothed in order to maintain alliances between groups and married at young ages

In The past say The 17Th, 18Th, and 19Th centuries it was the mans responsibility to establish himself in a career before considering marriage. And that could be as late as 33-35 yrs old.
The young ladies they married would be given by their families as early as 14-15 yrs old. But it was a different set of values they were working with.
A young man caught or known to be diddling with a mans daughter was likely to be beaten or whipped as punishment and the girl was then soiled goods, and would be hard to marry off should her dalliances be known publicly.

Well in the dark ages, it was not unusual for a man in his older years to marry a young girl of 16....sometimes marriages were arranged for sons of one family with the daughters of another family, it was usually done for personal gain or to move up in social ranks
