It works with your cycle and how your own hormones fluxuate during the month. This is a progesterone only pill.
I was given this when my estrogen was too high and causing me a lot of problems.
I personally did not like it. It made me crazy in the head with wild emotional swings and I could not control them. I had to get off.
Provera pills are much different than the Depo shot. I strongly suggest you visit with your doc again and have it throughly explained. Take your questions in written down and write down his answers. You will feel better after you have more information. Not knowing is the scary part.
Good luck to you.

RE:
How does Provera stop your periods?
My doctor prescribed 10mg Provera pills for 10 days to regulate and then stop my periods. I'm so confused by what he said. How can this bring on your period yet also stop them? How often do you take the 10-pill regime to stop your periods? Do you take it every month - I don't want my...

Gina sounds like she is PMSing... LOL Well if you have irregular periods, DRs prescribe birthcontrol, like your Provera. You take your pills to regulate your cycle. I get the 3 month Depo Provera shot, so it stops my period for like, 3 months. But I dont know how the pill really works. But I think I like taking the shot, because its easier than the pills, and it lasts for 3 months. But I heard it can cause bone loss or something like that if you use it long term. Best advice is to talk to your doctor to get your question straightened out, ask him to explain it more clearly. :)

As far as I know, when your levels of progesterone (provera capsules) increase gradually and then decrease, your period will start. If you take a prescibed dose and the levels never decrease your period will not start. Best wishes
