These calls are marked "private Number" or "Out of Area" 99% of the time.If I see this on my caller ID I will push any of the #s down which make a beeeeeeeeeeeeep noise and hold it down while I pick up.After a few seconds I release and listen.Most every time they have hung up quickly.They usually mark this as a fax not wanting to hear it again.
I also have an extra loud whistle I have been dying to blow.(Bad man)

give them nonsense answers - the type that would fail all parts of the spoken English language. Or take common phrases and mix them all together so they make no sense whatsoever - kind of like putting all the words in a hat, picking a few out that don't fit together and saying them as normally as you can.
I modified this because I just thought of another one, but this requires learning a different language of sorts - see if you can become adept at saying things backwards (either just reverse all words or learn to pronounce them backwards)
These will take some practice to be able to do without thinking about it.

If you have a child about 4 put them on the phone, they love to talk and it won't be long and the telemarketer will hang up. Or call the Do not call list,its free and in about 30days the calls will stop.

I always tell them I can't talk now but I'd like to hear more, please leave their name and home number so I can call and talk to them during dinner (or whatever). Most hang up ... if not and they keep talking, I just put the phone down and walk away.. they hang up eventually.
There is a # you can call to have telemarketeers to take you off their call lists... unfortunately, I don't have it yet.. but caller id works pretty good.

Once they get started on their spiel, just quietly lay down the phone and leave the room, so they are just talking to themselves.
But be aware this really pushes their buttons and they may start making hang-up calls to you in the middle of the night. It happened to me.
