Of course you'll need a business license, but that's the easy part. All it takes is filling out a form, and handing over some cash.

The hard part: where are your customers coming from? How are you going to sell? How much can you charge?

Often, entrepreneurs think in terms of operations and administration when starting the business. It's not that those aren't important... but your success is going to come from what you put into sales and marketing.

Put sales and marketing first. By comparison, the rest will be easy.

Good luck,
Rex

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start Your Own Lawn Care Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Eileen Figure Sandlin
* Start & Run A Landscaping Business by Joel LaRusic
* How to Start a Home-Based Landscaping Business, 4th by Owen Dell
* Lawn Care & Gardening: A Down-To-Earth Guide to the Business by Mickey Willis

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Rex is right.

Check with your state and local government about licensing requirements. Or if it's a tree business, you might want to try the department of agriculture. It all depends on how your state works.

Also, you community or state may have a small business development center that would be able to help point you in the right direction.

Good luck.
