There is no need to tip the mailman. But everyone else you mentioned doesn't make much in wages, therefore much of their income is dependent on how well their customers tip.

If they aren't making enough to pay their bills, then why should they feel motivated to give you good service or even do their jobs right for that matter?

I tip the haircutter and the server, but not the rest. The mailman, now that is extreme tipping. He gets paid fine, but since you already do it you are stuck, unless you move.

I don´t mind tipping for good, efficient and friendly service, but I get p*ssed off when the tip is automatically included. That means that I don´t have any say in the matter, and I don´t usually go back. And I don´t tip the mailman. Definitely, if he brings me news that I have won the lottery.

tipping has gotten out of control, but it is needed in the food service buisness, T>I>P>S, To Insure Prompt Service. with out tips, there really is no rush for waitstaff to do their best, if they just get paid by thier employer, they will not speed up or anything, because they will be paid no matter what, the tips are based on good service, so that should make them move faster, and give better service. but with any tipping, if its bad service, dont tip them, they need a good shaft every now and then to remind them what buisiness they are in.

It is true... It seems to be everywhere today. I guess restaurants are acceptable, but other places, c'mon. And oh yeah, tips are a good way for the employer to save on paying wages, and most of the time not everyone even tips as much as they should.
