How about a story about how a child changes as he accompanies his military family from base to base?

the middle aged thing might be a bit depressing and the American pie growing -up stories have been done to death!

and original idea has to be something that can provoke a reaction from the reader, the reader also has to care about the character enough to believe these events are happening to him/her.

for example, i like the traveling theme, but there needs to be a main character who is believable to a reader.
possible traits:
he/she could be a nasty, dangerous, vicious enough to do unspeakable things, for example, a mobster or hitman/woman.
who is trying to get out of the life of crime and start a family, bla bla bla and goes through a struggle of having a family and then putting them in a situation where the family is in danger.

hope this helps,
Nick

I like the medival idea, you could extend it.

Have him find his true love and and the parents take her away from him, tell him that he is not worthy and the he is not a nobleman.

Over the years he becomes a knight and is "brave" by slaying dragons and such then have him meet an old man and that man would tell him that his life is depressing because he let his true love run away and he never ran after. He realizes this and goes back to get his girl.

A horse could symbolize the transportation on his journey of realizing that you don't have to rich and "noble" to be with your true love.

You could set it in medieval times and have it be about a youth whose life changes as he or she journeys with a knight to slay a dragon.
