If the Check Engine light is flashing, this means that the engine computer (ECM) has detected that your engine is misfiring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Have the your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.

Hiya Jess, The check engine light is controlled by the engine controller in the car. An oil change or brakejob will have no impact on it. The most typical reason for a check engine light is the car has detected a misfire. Federal Law requires the car to be programed to illuminate the check engine light because of excess hydrocarbon emmissions with a misfire. If this was a temporary event, the light would reset. Since it continues, another likely reason is the oxygen sensor in the exhaust system has failed. If you would like your car in working order, or to find out what it is complaining about you can take it to a Ford/Merc dealer, or a reputable mechanic who can plug in to the car and read it's failure codes and perhaps reset it if it was just a misfire. Be prepared to pay about $75. It is unlikely you bought a '99 from a new car dealer, but if you bought it from a used car dealer, they may be able to read the codes and might do it for free just to make you a satisfied customer.

Sounds like you have an engine misfire. It could be anything from worn plugs, to a bad wire or a crack in the distributor cap. Almost anything can make the egine misfire all the way down to a vacuum leak. The check engine lite is on because of this misfire causing the engine to run very rich. Do not wait, but go to a qualified repair shop for a proper diagnosis and repair estimate.

Take the vehicle to AUTOZONE have them check the codes you have a misfire detected on a cylinder chances are that a plug or a plug wire is the culprit it will tell what cylinder is misfiring and you can start there but if it has a bad plug or a wire I would recommend a good tune up with new wires and plugs also replace the fuel filter because lack of fuel will also cause a misfire hope this info helps you and also Autozone will check the codes for you for FREE but beware they are in the business to sell parts and if you have a misfire code take care of it before replacing alot of sensors which they sell.

I would guess it's the computer. The same exact thing happened to my friends Tracer and that's what it was. It cost $411 to fix and then they put the wrong computer in. He doesn't have cruise control anymore because of this but the garage is going to get ahold of a new one (the right one) and fix it for free. Good luck.

Unless something blatantly wrong can be seen under the hood, you will need to take it to a mechanic who has a computer that can talk to your car's computer. This will give you an accurate diagnosis.

Go somewhere and have it put on the machine. Most places do not charge for this service. Ask first.
