Ocean Liners and ships Have to have a sewage treatment plant on board and in operating condition as per IMO and SOLAS regulations. smaller vessels such as Small Yachts and Regular boats have to pump them out at a pumping station, Which is then treated at a sewage Treatment Plants. You dump them at sea IF you are more than three NM from any point of land. Not three miles from shore.

Ocean liners can dump sewage directly into the ocean outside the three-mile limit.

For smaller ships, they have sewage tanks that they transfer to a pump out station.
