It is nice and it is bad, depends on what part of if you move to.
There are slums, trailer parks, a great space center, wonderful people, and so on.
Anywhere is what you make of it.

Depending on where in Australia you lived, there are parts of Alabama that will seem even more foreign to you. It's merely a matter of culture clashes (ask any Alabamian who ever moved to New York City whose friends told them THEY were crazy).
If you live in a metro area of Australia, move to a metro area in Alabama, such as the the Huntsville (not far from Nashville) or Birmingham (not far from Atlanta) areas. If you lived near the coast, move to Mobile.
And, keep an open mind about anything and everything -- regardless of whereever you EVER move. It's always different (take it from an Alabamian who lived in New Jersey for eight years).
Most Alabamians will find your accent charming. They'll love hearing about kangeroos and the like. However, they might test you in the beginning by trying to get to you eat unusual things (such as deer or squirrel) or go on a "snipe" hunt (don't do it -- there's no such thing as a snipe) -- but have a good nature. Once they believe that you WANT to live there, they'll be the best friends you've ever had.

Certain parts of Alabama are nice and some aren't, like every other place in the world. However, Alabama has garnered a bad reputation as a place where lynchings and opossum hunts occur, although neither has happened recently to the best of my knowledge. Your critics are more likely trying to warn you because they think it's a hick place. Well, it is, really. But the people I've met there are nice, and who said you have to live in a cosmopolitan nightclub? So get a learn-to-speak-southern handbook, fishing pole, and a bowl of grits and enjoy life in Alabama! (And shoo those opossums off the porch before they get into the garbage!)

We moved to Birmingham from Chicago and have absolutely loved it. It's a fairly cosmopolitan place with excellent restaurants, a good arts scene, and very nice people. Huntsville and Mobile also appear to be that way. Montgomery, however, seems to have no redeeming qualities aside from a good Shakespeare theatre.
In short, attitude will make the difference in how you like your stay. Good luck!

I live in Alabama. It is not as bad as people make it out to be, they just don't really know what it's like here because they don't live here. It's just like any other state.
