Children... those stories always scare the crap out of me! Then you could have your good guy have a kid that is kidnapped.

It sounds like the antagonist (evil guy) needs either to acquire some sort of object/person of power or else he will lose what power he has. It would be good if the protagonist (good guy) were either in possession of or also trying get the object.

Deadlines also work for hurrying a story along (ie: when the moon is full, next solar eclipse, other astrological phenomenon, etc.)

The bad guy most pluck the flower from the corpse flower, since it blooms once in a three year period it is difficult task. Since it's fantasy novel you can make it 10 years and the only place it grows is over the grave of an equally evil witch/wizard that is guarded by the good folks of whatever setting you are in.

A flower taller than a man, stinking strongly of putrefying roadkill and colored deep burgundy to mimic rotting flesh, sounds like something from a low-budget science fiction movie. But Indonesia's titan arum—or "corpse flower," as known by locals—is a real, if rare, phenomenon, pollinated in the wild by carrion-seeking insects.

Well, it sounds like your saying that he needs to keep his powers by having "something". So i can give you some ideas, i guess.

The evil guy can have a: staff, pendant/necklace, ring, tatoo?, earings, cloak. Or even a feeling like: love, hate, jealousy
hmmm..or people: his lover, an animal with powers....etc

So these are just couple of ideas. And, if I was wrong about your question, then yah, its confusing. =) Good luck!

The evil guy looks to the sky where there is an almighty storm, with the words 'Bantrinatious Jasbond!' the lightning strikes him down, and he is more powerful than ever. He is a worthy foe, and will not go down without a fight.

How about modify the Samson biblical story where his power comes from his hair. Or maybe he has to stay awake and the good guys slip him a sleeping tablet to make him sleep. It has to be something that the goodies can eventually overcome.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But he's gluten intolerant, so he has to suck the peanut butter and jelly out of the sandwich with his fangs. School kids open their lockers at lunch time to find their sandwiches reduced to shrivelled husks. There is great weeping and gnashing of teeth. Principal Edgewater is suspected until someone slips wheat germ into his morning coffee, and he doesn't break out in hives (like one suffering from gluten intolerance might). Finally, little Billy Snitchfield captures the monster at the school prom with a giant trap made out of peanut butter, jelly, ball-bearings and super glue.

the truly villinous usually need something pure. so why not a sacred object that belongs to one of the heroes friends? or the powerful spirit contained within the child like sibling of one of the heroes friends.
