1. Find a trainer who understands your goals. Make your goals clear to yourself and the trainer. I want to slow my horse down- I want to ride in a dressage show this summer- I want to learn the piaffe before I die. Whatever those goals are, write them down and go for it!
2. You don't need a dressage saddle until you start moving into 1st level. A decent all-purpose or close contect will do at first. Just a way for you to save some cash as you find out iof dressage is your sport.
3. Remember that dressage is like dancing.
You know how tough those ballet dancers are? Really tough.
Dressage looks like nothing is happening but it's very hard work for you an your horse. Remember it's hard, and give your horse the benefit of the doubt if he's grouchy sometimes. You are both building brand-new muscles and brain patterns.
4. Get out of the arena and go for a little hack or jump a teeny course of jumps one day every month at least. Dressage is high-concentration, you have to have a relaxation day every so often or one of you or both will burn out.
5. Have fun! You have chosen a very demanding sport wich few people understand or appreciate, in which you will never make a million dollars or be on TV in primetime. But this is one of the most beautiful sports in the world, and the relationship you will build with your horse is second-to-none.

If you are going to ride dressage get a trainer who is qualified in dressage and one that you are comfortablewith. You will need to take lessons.
I do some light dressage and I think it has helped my riding ability very much. It is also good for teaching the horse to calm down and work.
