Definitely Madeleine L'Engle. She has a number of good books, although the 'Wrinkle in Time' trilogy is probably the best known (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet). I have re-read these books twenty+ years later and still been enthralled by the stories and characters.

I would reccomend the Inheritance trilogy (the first two are Eragon and eldest) and the Green rider books. The first one is "Green Rider" and the second is "First riders call". They are all fantasy novels, but all very very good books. The Inheritance books have dragons and all kinds of cool stuff. I loved them because the writer was only a teen when he published the first one. The green rider series is good because the main hero is a woman. It really is a great series. YOu should read both series. And no, they are DEFINITELY not cotton candy novels.

If you are a young teen then try The Clique series, The Uglies Series, Harry Potter, Flipped, Down River & River Thunder, The City of Ember & People of Sparks.

If you liked THe Clique, then you could try the A-List series, and Gossip Girl. Also, another amazing book is My Sister's Keeper. I recommend all of these books!

Harry Potter is a great series and very addicting. Try one of those or if you liked Sisterhood then maybe, those teen series on the popular girls (forgot what its called but every girl in my school reads it).
