it used to be to minimize the hours we are active during darkness and thus maximize the time available for work, but now that we can comfortably work at night we don't need it, so some states have stopped observing it.

Daylight savings time was created for farmers originally. It allows for a longer work day and a more abundant harvest.

It was originated by Benjamin Franklin. I believe it was for the benefit of agriculture and commerce, particularly before the common use of artificial lighting.
