I think in this day and age, it is soo much more accepted by society to be a young, unmarried mom. And it is definately not only in the black community. I have four white friends that have had a baby before they reached 21, including myself. My fiance and I were already living together and planning our wedding when we found out I was pregnant. We bought a house and are now getting married next year. It is sad though, because there are many young moms who are no longer with the father, or are not as lucky as we were to have soo much support from our families.

Oh and PS my fiance blames the sudden baby boom in young people on the NHL strike. Guys couldn't watch the game so they had a lot more sex.

It's not fashionable in the least, but it's what's happening. Young women today feel they need to give up sex in order to either get or keep their guy, and when he starts asking to have unprotected sex she feels that he'll leave if she says no (not to say that unprotected sex is the ONLY way to get pregnant, my best friend has gotten pregnant no matter what form of protection has been used). To me, while I do not condone that and would be upset if any of my future kids got pregnant before age 20, my heart does go out to these girls because they are forced to grow up far faster than they are usually ready to, and in some cases they don't have anyone at all to turn to once they get pregnant. It is "popular" in all nationalities, but I will say that as a person of colour myself, I do notice that we blacks do tend to just settle because we feel we can't do any better than what we have now.

Well, 200 years ago, it was quite popular to have multiple children before age 20. These days, many people under 20 with a kid made the mistake of thinking they could have unprotected sex with no consequences. Race has nothign to do with it, but intelligence does play a large role.

I don't mean to be rude in any perspective, but you're right. I see it way more in the black community. I'm not sure why, however. In fact, one of the high schools I live near is one of the only high schools in America that has a day-care for students' babies while they are at school. It amazes me...Anyway, everyone knows how hard babies are to deal with, so I don't think it's the fact that it's a "trend." I think people are just not having safe sex. Which bothers me.

It used to be..even back in the early 90's..that only a couple of girls got pregnant in high school. Now..that is way different.

I think there is a romanticized idea of what being a mother is, and what it is like to have a baby, and have a baby with a boy/man.

It saddens me that this happens so often. I feel sorry for the children that weren't given the advantage of being born to older, wiser, more mature parents..ready to invest in the lives of their children.

People don't have a reason to have children, the thing is they become of age to have sex and they do, but the problem for the girl is that she may become a mother, the urge is grater than the thought of the out come, we as people think it ok if a girl gets married at 18 and then has a baby, why its no-longer there problem and they are of legal age
As for blacks I think they just forget to use the condom, like their mother or father told them to

I don't think it is fashionable, it has just became more acceptable I think. And with people being more use to it, people seem to just be doing it more.

Kind of like when you give a kid an inch they take a mile..... well, we aren't having such a bad reaction as we use to about it and now they are doing it more.

I also think it's everywhere, not just in one race or another. It's across the board.

i dont think this is about fashion'

its just looks good that you are young and yet you are willingto push through the pregnancy and not abort it

it also feels good that you and your baby will both go through the growing process

imagine by the time you are 30, you will have an 18-year old kid.

the two of you would probably enjoy and like most of the things together because the age difference is not that big. you two will be best of friends

I understand where you're coming from. In today's society I do not understand why so many children are born to teen parents when there is ample birth control available ....Dr's, clinics, planned parenthood are all available to stop any unwanted pregnancy.

I too have noticed that it's not a racial issue. Young teens of every culture are in this same predicament.

Maybe more education is needed.

If you had said before 18, I would have that its a shame for the kids to be having babies at that age but it's not that unusual for people to marry at 18 and have baby(es) before they are 19, my first wife and I married when she was 18 and I was 21 ,she had our first child just before she turned 20 we were together for almost 20 years before she passed on
