The icon is located in the lower right half of the monitor. When I place the cursor on it the message reads that 'updates are ready for your computer'. I beleive that this is some type of spyware/adware or worse.

No, if its a yellow shield icon it's microsoft's automatic update service working. If you don't want to see the icon or not have updates automatically downloaded go to the MS security center in control panel and turn it off....

that is not a soyware or something. It is the update genreated by your own Operating system.U dont need to install any spywares as others say.If u dont want updates,go to control panel, open security centre and turn off automatic updates(after which you'll get a message stating "your computer must be at risk". but dont worry its again a message from yoyr operating system.just ignore it)

Its not malicious. If it is bothering you that much go to your control panel and click on your firewall if you have one.You will then see your automatic update setting. You should be able to change the settings to manual updates.

ok I know that the Sultan made a point with a lot of removers, but the only REALLY good one is ewido,no one much has heard of it but it gets rid of the weird little things and everything else people keep complaining about. The thing is here:

Are you sure it's not your automatic window updares?

What is your operating system? If XP, have you upgraded to [L=Windows XP Service Pack 2]http://www.komando.com/tips_wxpsp2.asp [/L] ? If not, I suggest you do so, for amoung other security reasons, it stops unwanted popups by disableing Windows Messenger Service and Alerter by default. = [L=SP2 = support.microsoft.com ]http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxpsp2[/L]

The most important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates + =http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Note: The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs before reconnecting to the net.
