If so, any recommendations for what to do and see and where to stay during vacations 8/5-8/20/2006? I may do some camping, kayacking, see the countryside and historic sites. I would also like to see the cities and get to know the people too. I do enjoy a good beer or scotch and folk or rock music. I will have a car. This is what I have found about the festivals at that time (the ones with asterisks sound especially interesting):
*8/4-6, N/L Folk/Busker Festivals, St. John’s, Avalon
8/6-7, Ramea Paddle Festival, Ramea (S. Western-Island)
8/8-10, Sunsplash, Paradise, Conception Bay, Avalon
*8/11-13, Brimstone Head Folk Festival, Fogo Island
8/10-13, Hants Harbour Crab Festival, Avalon-campsites
8/11-13, Norman’s Cove-Long Cove Beach festival, Long Cove,
8/10-13, Brigus Blueberry Festival, Avalon
8/12-14, Port Union Fish &Berry Festival, Trinity Bay N
*8/15, Seafood Festival, Miquelon, Southern
Thanks

Yes, I'm a Newfoundlander! Glad to hear you're going to make a trip to The Rock! Sounds like you have some great ideas already. I definately agree you should go sea kayaking. Nothing like kayaking in the North Atlantic, especially if you're lucky enough to have a whale or two in the area with you! Since you enjoy beer and music I highly recommend a visit to O'Reily's Pub on George Street in St. John's. They have live music all weekend and I believe it's Thursday nights when they invite anyone to drop in with their instrument of choice and just start playing with whomever stops in. It usually turns into a great evening of traditional Newfoundland music.

You won't have any trouble getting to know the people. Newfoundlanders are famous for chatting and, I don't mean to brag, but incredibly friendly!! So no worries there my son! A great afternoon (or morning) would be to go out on the Scademia (A two masted schooner) that takes tourists out to sea with tradtional Newfoundland music playing and sometimes they even take you out to view an iceberg (if there are any around) they have been known to chip off a piece and you'll get served drinks with ice straight from the berg! Of course they also take you to see the whales and cliffs. And while in St. John's, there are breathtaking views of the ocean from hiking trails up on Signal Hill.

If you have the time, I suggest heading up to Gros Morne National park for absoutely stunning scenery, great hikes, camping, sea kayaking and more. Here's a website for that area if you're interested: http://www.grosmorneadventures.com/

Your idea of taking in one of the festivals is a grand idea as well! Hopefully you can run into the band Great Big Sea at one of them.

Enjoy!

http://www.newfoundland.com/ I hope you enjoy your visit!
If you do go to Cape Spear .. STRONG ADVISORY stay clear of the rocks.. we lost two tourists last year for they got too close to the waves & detered the written warnings on signs.
