Scientifically, there is no difference.

Scientifically?

Well...

My theory is that without some support (i.e. while wearing boxers), the testicles are wholly dependent on the scrotum to keep them from falling to the ground due to gravity. Because the scrotum is made of skin, an elastic membrane that can stretch over time, the constant tugging of gravity on the testicles will cause the scrotum to stretch and lengthen in the direction of the source of gravity (down).

Maybe this is why old men have balls that hang to thier knees!

So to avoid a knee-length scrotum, boxerbriefs are superior because they relieve the scrotum from having to support the testicles all day long.

One also has to consider boners. Boxerbriefs and boxers both have plenty of room for penile expansion (unlike briefs). However, boxerbriefs hold the erect penis closer to the body than boxers, therefore reducing the potential for embarassment associated with pitching a tent in a public environment.

Athletics... If the wearer is to engage in activities with a lot of movement, the user's equipment will bang around (into the side of the leg, the other teste, the penis). Due to the delicate nature of the testicles and their painful reaction to being banged around, it is beneficial to minimize this banging. Boxerbriefs are better at mimimizing banging.

Ventilation... If the wearer lives in a warm climate, ventilation might become important. Pants do not allow much air flow, but if wearing shorts, ventilation to the groin region is available. Boxerbriefs are snug at the leg openings, so air cannot access the wearer's equipment as easily. Boxers provide superior ventilation because their baggy leg openings allow air to access the balls.

Shwetty Balls. There are modern fabrics that possess moisture-wicking capabilities to reduce moisture against the skin. This fabric works with two sandwiched layers - the layer in contact with the skin pulls the moisture away (for comfort) and conducts it to the outer layer for evaporation. Both boxers and boxerbriefs are available in these modern moisture wicking textiles. Because this fabric must be in contact with the skin's surface to draw the moisture away, boxerbriefs are superior because they are snugger and therefore more surface area is in contact with the testicles. Therefore balls tend to be less shwetty while wearing boxer briefs.

Coverage...Both boxers and boxerbriefs are about the same shape, and cover the same parts of the body. If sagging, changing in a locker room, or sleeping etc., the same amount of skin is exposed with both styles of undergarment. One small difference in coverage might be noted when shorts are being worn. Because boxers have baggy legs, the possibility of the package being seen by others increases (Especially if the user has long balls that hang out the bottom of his shorts).

It appears that boxerbriefs are superior in avoiding long (old man) balls, mimimizing discomfort due to banging, and shwetty balls. Boxers are superior in providing ventilation.

If the only reason that boxers are better than boxerbriefs is their ability to provide ventilation, one has to ask, are boxers even necessary? One can achieve comparable ventilation by going commando.

To summarize, it appears that boxers don't really do anything, and therefore aren't necessary. Scientifically, it appears that boxerbriefs are better.
