Please, please, please, don't rice it out. Big rims, shiny exhausts, tinting - they all just make your classy car look cheap, not to mention doing nothing for you and devaluing it when you go to sell.

As far as customizing, try to figure out what you want to do first. Interior, sound, exterior, and performance are probably the 4 biggest areas.

There isn't a whole lot to do to the interior. I've seen people swap out door panels or the steering wheel, but it isn't a terribly value-added area to mod. Sound (or In-Car Entertainment) is a much easier area to upgrade. A good first mod (cheap, with a lot of bang for the buck) is the Dension ICE Link - a hook up for iPods. It's in the $150 range.

For the exterior, some people go with clear signals for a clean look - it's something of a matter of taste. Angel eye headlights are popular - check out Umnitza (sp?).

For performance mods, there isn't much you can do to an NA engine short of supercharging it - exhausts won't make a difference unless the engine is FI. Look at Dinan for an idea of what's available. A CAI is another option. SS brake lines and racing fluid and pads are a cheap brake upgrade. And tires are probably the biggest factor you can easily change - PS2s are considered the benchmark.

Active Autowerks is another good tuner, to get an idea of what's available.

There's not a lot that can go wrong with an oil change so I wouldn't be too worried. Heck you could do this at home without any hassle. You're on the East Coast so if you use organic oil, I'd suggest something that rates as low as 5 so you don't worry about freezing. Aside from that you might consider using synthetic oil which has 3 times the life of organic oil and much better hot/cold tolerances. I only use synthetic in my 3 BMWs. (325, 328 and M3.)

Tint the windows for sure. Customized cars really stand out with the darkest legal tints possible. After that, I would probably look into some basic body kits...BMW's have a cool look as is, so don't ruin it by showering your car with very obvious and noticable body add ons. If you're more interested in the engine, I would suggest either a supercharger, or a turbocharger, look them up.

I have that exact same model, a lighter 323i blue one.

I'm also thinking of customizing it...and from what I've seen around my college campus...getting silver or white lights and turn signals instead of the orange ones is a good start. It makes the headlights on it seem brighter and people can easily mistake it for an M3 from the front!

I'm also looking to cover the exhaust pipes with something more shinier instead of the dull stock. I'd definitely replace the rims to something more thinner and sleeker.

What's your car's paint color? Try keeping it glossy if you decide to change it and consistent with your headlight colors.

Have fun with it though. It's a classy and reliable car and one that's still manageable to customize.

i have done up mine by putting the
M5 18 inch wheels on it
putting a chrome grill on it
putting halo headlights on it
clear hi chrome indicators
red and white tail lights on it not Lexus lights they only devalue it
clear side repeaters
New chrome fog lights
strut brace on suspension towers in engine
new hi performance air filter not an induction kit , too loud
any of them make a massive difference
there is a massive difference between the car i had and the car i have now mine is metallic black so it looks excellent with the chrome , it looks like a proper customization not a cheap thrown together thing , and i have had dozens of people asking me if i would sell the car to them for a lot more than i paid for it but the biggest difference will be the wheels and the grill try the M5 wheels they are savage. hope i helped
