I think that lady got it totally wrong. I perm my hair because it gets really tiring to keep it up, and when i'm getting up at 5am in the morning for work/school, who has time for dat. I just snatch that crap in a ponytail and i'm out. You should have told her to mind her f-in business. That goes for the weave too, its so much easier.

Being a beautiful Black woman you need not trouble yourself over what that lady said. That is part of the beauty of it,you have a choice of when, where or whether or not you wear a weave in your hair. She probably don't understand the black culture and you happen to be there when she thought she had to say something about it.Yes you are black and your beautiful,Don't let the feeble words of some woman mess with your mind to the point that you begin questioning your beauty.I am a black man and i think all black women are beautiful because God made you .That's something no one can ever take from you.

I think that we have beautiful hair too but that broad needs to mind her own damn business.
If you are approached again feel free to tell a person that you love yourself for everything God made you and that God also made life a way to experience new things and find happiness and the folks who hide behind this whole self hate thing are doing just the opposite---HATING!!!
Furthermore, that hefer should have met me at that bus stop with weave down to my butt. You see I love people like that so i have a chance to unleash all the self-love I have.

This is a good question. On the surface I think you should be able to wear any type of hairstyle that you want. As someone already stated it's your head and you should be able to do whatever you want with it. On a deeper level I can identify with what the lady said (not the manner in which she approached you just what she said). Why do we feel that we have to put piles of hair on our head in order to be pretty (Tyra Banks comes to mind--really her weaves are a bit much)? I'm afraid I don't have the answer to this troubling question. You'll have to decide for yourself what the answer is.

I think the lady was quite presumptuous as to the reasons that people wear weave. like anything else, its a preference. Some white women wear weave as well.
As a guy, I usually like to see women sport a natural look whether its long or short. But, I dont have to wear it so its not up to me. Do whatever makes you feel good, its your body and your life.

The versitality of women of color is unmatchable!!
Women of color can do what they feel like doing with their hair without confirmation from anyone!! I've never seen so many people interested in a nationalities coif and hair, as I have with women of color.
Women who have naturally unkinked hair are always wanting to put their hands in the hair of a woman (or man for that matter) of color. It is intriguing to them.
Guess what?? Have you ever seen little boys and girls of color being intriguied by playing in a White person's hair?? I'm sure you have.
God made us different so that we would learn to embrace and appreciate each others' differences. If the truth be told we want to know more about each other's differences more than we verbalize.
Whatever floats your boat. My hair, weave, wigs, falls, attachments, braids, extentions etc. is nobody's business by mine (smile). And we ALL wear weaves wigs, falls etc. Black, White, Red, Yellow and Brown nationalities.

I think the woman was a crackpot and you should just continue doing things the way you do them. You don't need her approval. Maybe she thought she was giving you a compliment by saying your natural hair is more beautiful. When you encounter people like her, just smile and nod gracefully and let 'em ramble, because you know you can't have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

It's to eaches own. I like my hair so I chooses not to wear it. I have though in the past wore weave and many people really thought it was my hair. My hair is thinning out as I'm getting older I see.

I may be just another "white girl" but I can tell you this much. You can and should wear your hair anyway you please! I don't give a damn if you want to tie it up and let animals live in it you should be able to do it without people coming up and telling you about it. It reminds me of when I was in high school and I liked to dye my hair green. Yes I know my natural hair color is pretty but I just didn't feel like it at the time, so rock your locks girl ANY WAY YOU PLEASE!!!!

She just went to extreme with the Black Self Hate speech, maybe back in the day when the afro came out and Black Power Black people were perming their hair and the light skinned Blacks with "good hair" felt like they are better than the dark skinned Blacks with "bad hair" but now days we do what the hell we want and we look good doin it but I would like to ask her "when the white ladies and other race ladies wear hair extensions are they trying to be Black and have self hatred for their race?

It's all up to that individual person.
I decided to let my hair grow out naturally last year and it was not because I believed that I was disassociate myself from my heritage. I am a "gumbo pot" of different heritage's (majority black) but my hair is curly, wavy, and soft. The basic reason for going back to my natural hair was because that was the hair I was born with, why not keep it that way. I do straighten it out at times just to change it up a little bit. I do know people that wear weaves but it is because they want a change things up. I truly believe that one's hair does not disassociate them from their heritage. It's when one disassociate his/herself from their family is when they are walking away from their heritage.
