i have 70 family guy episodes on my computer. is it possible to put these into a zipped folder and save memory? also i have a lot of pics on my computer, and i put them in a zipped folder, but when i did this, they went into the zipped folder but they stayed in there old folder also. so now i have 2 folders with the same pictures in both. why is this and is it okay if i delete the pictures from the old folder and keep the pics in the zipped folder?

File compression programs work better on text than on binary files. Images and movies are mostly binary, therefore they don't compress much.
That said, you might get a 2% to 3% savings by zipping all your images and movies. After you create a zip, you can delete the original files. If you are REALLY low on storage space, then that will help.

You won't save memory, you will save storage ... there is a big difference. Yes, you can delete the duplicates. Also a compressed folder is not the same as a zipped folder. You will get more space back by zipping the folder.

Usually video and picture files do not zip well. They do no unzip well and you can lose data. It will not save memory, but it will save hard drive space. When you put them in a zip folder, it is creating a file that contains all of the files. It will not automatically delete the original files.
If you are worried about hard drive space, buy an external hard drive. You can get 300gig hard drives for a few hundred bucks anymore

Compressing mpg and avi files will not make a very big differences. Rather u can convert the video file into DivX format it will save some spaces. (Search Google for Free avi/mpg to DivX converter. also u will need the latest DivX codec) Yiu can try "ImTooMpeg encoder (its a small but powerful audio and video converting software)
Yeah you can delete the old files or folders after Zipping

I agree with ditre06. Video files don't compress at all. It's probably not worth the effort. Writing them onto DVDs is the best option, if you don't want to buy another hard drive. Zipping works best with spreadsheets and word processing documents, because the application embeds a lot of blank spaces into the files.

It depends upon the type of files. Files like jpeg photos are already super compressed and thus you won't save any space. Same for MP3 files. Other things like wav and txt files can be compressed more.

it depends on the file type. Photos that are in gif or jpg are already compressed format, so it's useless to zip it.
for the episodes, if the format is either xvid or divx, zipping is useless.

not memory, drive space, and if you use full compression, itr will cut them down by about halp. best thing is to burn them onto a cd or dvd so you just selete them and tehn get them from the cd or dvd when you want them

video files dont really compress to well, you could try getting another harddrive to put the files in, looking for files you can delete, burn them on DVDs instead of keeping them on your harddrive
