I mostly have larger birds at my cheaper hummingbird feeder. They pick out the grills and pitch them aside to get at the nectar...I don't mind the beautiful, sleek orange guys with black racing stripes, though. Orioles? Lost my bird book. Hummers will come around, if they see red. 3/4 c. water, 1/4 c. sugar, a bit of red food coloring. They drink it up in less than a week, but then I'm in the desert.

It does take some time, instead of putting out just one bird feeder put out several, and make sure that the necter you use is always clean. These feeders usually always attracts bee's as well. Be careful where you place them.

i think of it might count on the place you reside, and what styles of hummers you have. In my area of California, we've particularly Anna's hummingbirds. there's a huge inhabitants right here that in no way migrates, through our extremely gentle winters. So we merely shop our feeders out all 365 days long. i've got additionally heard that even in areas the place hummers DO migrate, they gained't unavoidably be "held back" by technique of the presense of feeders. The migration instinct is quite stable, supposedly. yet i can't say from own adventure, on the grounds that I merely somewhat comprehend approximately my community Anna's. :)
