its a dell, replaced the mother board a year ago cause I fried it. But it recently started getting pretty hot really quickly, even then its hovering over open space. I cleaned the fans and heat sink, blown the insides clear of dust, but the problems still remain.

What could be going on, and how do I fix this?

It's probably because there is not enough ventilation beneath it. If you have it sitting on a pillow, bed, clothing, etc, then it's not going to be able to move the air away from the chassis as easily.

I would suggest getting a laptop fan. It's a panel that sits beneath the laptop, equipped with two fans that suck air away from it. You can find one at Best Buy or Circuit City for about 30 dollars.

I'm using one now, in fact. They plug in via USB and take power from the laptop itself, so it's useful that way. Low battery usage and a great help overall.

It may also be an issue, even if the fans and heatsink assemble are free and clear of dust that the ambient temperature in the place you are using it is simply too hot. I currently live in Las Vegas, where the ambient temperature in my room can get to the 100s if the Ac in the house is not functioning properly. When that happens, no matter how good the cooling the case temperature rises too high and then the core temps get too high to run the pcs. It is a good idea to remove obstructions of airflow in the room and to not run the laptop in a corner or in direct sunlight and crank the AC. If that does not work it is likely that components are either damaged again, or components that were transplanted during the mobo swap are damaged.

it particularly is amazingly uncomplicated for a computing device to get particularly warm on the backside of it, thats no longer a great deal. the fan hurries as much as attempt to decrease the warmth so any extreme warmth will make the fan velocity up. attempt putting your computing device in a diverse place. in case you have the computing device in a warm room, or in case you place you computing device on something that would genuinely warmth up, then it is going to reason your pc to get warmer than general. If that would not artwork, get somebody to make useful your pc isnt basically having problems with overheating as some computers overheat extra suitable than others or if something is incorrect which comprise your fan than it is going to overheat extra even while it sounds like it particularly is rushing up. If all else fails or in case you dont want to spend the money having your pc fastened, bypass to a working laptop or pc save and purchase a "cool mat". Its a mat that cools down your pc once you place it on it and could save your pc from overheating or getting TOO warm.

You might also check if there is something working in the background and making the CPU run at a high percentage of use.
Go to task manager (put mouse cursor over blank spot on bar at bottom of screen click on task manager then click performance and
see how much CPU is working. IT may be a Trojan Horse or something running in the background.

If you replaced the motherboard, you may have mistakenly over looked the processor.... when you over heat a motherboard, it affects the processor as well, and it may need to be replaced, or it may not be compatible with the new motherboard, I would check both... But I assure you if it just cuts off, its the Processor, not the motherboard...
